Introduction to Fault Tolerance

Fault tolerance is a property that enables a computer system to operate properly during the time of failures of some of its components.  It’s the ability of the system to operate normally in the events of hardware, software or any service failure. Fault tolerance can be provided with the software, hardware or the combination of both.  They detect the anomaly in the system and the faulty component takes out of the service.

A backup system or service takes place of the faulty service and so computer system works properly without losing any data.  Many fault tolerant computer system mirror all their operations on the multiple machines so in case if one machine fails the other continue to work normally.

  • Software fault tolerance is the ability of the software to recover itself from the failure due to the system’s hardware of the software itself.
  • Hardware components and system are equipped with the redundant hardware modules.  When a fault or failure is occurred in the systems the redundant modules take over the functions of the failed hardware modules.
