Broadband Internet
Broadband is an advanced telecommunication technology that provides the internet connectivity at very high speed. In the broadband connection, the wide bands of frequencies are available to provide the two way data, voice and video communication simultaneously. The broadband technologies include DSL, cable modem, satellite internet and fixed wireless. DSL provides the data transmission from 128Kbps up to 9Mbps.
Due to it’s high speed internet connectivity and other capabilities the DSL service has replaced the Dial up connections rapidly. Today, hospitals, universities, corporate organizations, banks and even home users prefer to use DSL over the dial up connections. Broadband internet technologies are operated by using the different mediums and technologies. There are following three major types of the broadband connectivity.
DSL stands for the Digital Subscribers lines. DSL is a broadband internet connectivity technology that uses the existing telephone lines to connect to the internet. DSL provides the 50 times faster speed than the standard dial up modems. DSL technologies use modulation schemes to pack the data onto the existing copper telephone lines. The most commonly used DSL technology is ADSL. Typical DSL connections allows user to send data at 1.5 Mbps and receive data at 256 Kbps. DSL service remains on all the time and user don’t need to dial the internet connection. DSL is a group of technologies that is further divided into the following categories.
Symmetric Digital Subscribers Lines and it is being used as a replacement for the dedicated T1 lines. SDSL uses two standard phone lines for the data transmission of 1.5Mbps.
IDSL stands for the ISDN Digital Subscribers lines that can work and coexist with the current analog ISDN connections. ISDL is limited to the 144Kbps.
Asymmetric Digital Subscribers Lines uses two different transmission speeds i.e. the downstream speed and the upstream speed. It can provide the downstream data rates up to 8Mbps and the upstream data rates at 1 Mbps.
VDSL stands for the Very High Speed Digital Subscribers Lines, which provides the higher speed than the ADSL over the shorter distances.
HDSL stands for the High Data Rate Digital Subscribe Line and it uses the two standard phone lines for the data transmission. It can combine the three phone lines to offer much high speed.
A cable modem is a device that provides high speed internet connectivity over the copper wire. Cable modems are used to provide the broadband internet access to the home and office users. Cable modem performs the modulation between the analog and digital signals. Usually a cable modem is an external device and it is attached to the Ethernet card inside your computer.
Satellite Internet is very high speed internet connectivity that provides the sending and receiving of the data signals via satellite. A special modem is connected with the computer and a dish antenna transmits and receives the signals. Satellite internet provides the uplink speed at 50 to 150 Kbps and downloads speed ranges from 150Kbps to 1200Kbps. Satellite connectivity is good browsing and transferring the files.
Fixed wireless connections refer to the wireless systems that are placed in the fixed locations inside a home and office. In the fixed wireless connectivity, the subscribers can be added or moved with the replacing the infrastructure.
