Windows 2000 Professional Tips

Microsoft offer different flavors for the Windows based operating systems such as Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  Different versions of the operating systems have different functionalities.   Windows is a name of the several families of the operating systems by Microsoft. In this article, you will various troubleshooting, performance, security and maintenance related tips in the Windows 2000 Professional.

  1. Windows 2000 Professional
    •     Adding Local Users

To add local users go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Local Users and Groups.

  • Create Emergency Repair Disk

To create emergency repair disk (ERD) go to start > run and type ntbackup > select the emergency repair disk option > check to option to backup the registry to repair directory option.

  • How to View and Print a Fax

Click Start > Program > Accessories > Communications > Fax and My faxes
In the My Faxes Folder > double click receive faxes or send faxes.
Now, double click the fax that you want to view.  The fax will be displayed in the imaging preview viewer.
Click print on the file menu if you want to print the fax.

  • How to Enable/Disable Task Manager

Start > regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Create the DWORD value DisableTaskMgr.
Give 0 to enable it and give 1 to disable it.

  • Enable Hibernation

To enable hibernation go to the Control Panel and Power options
Now click on the hibernation tab.
Check enable Hibernation support.
When you go to logoff select the hibernation option.

  • Disk Cleanup

To clean your temporary internet files and the temp files you need to do the following.

Click My Computer and select the drive you want to clean.
Now, right click the drive and select properties.
Click the disk clean up button and select the type of the files that you want to remove from your computer.

  • Moving My Documents

Start > Documents > Right click My documents > Select Explore
Right click on my documents.  Right click and select properties.
Click the move button and select the location where you want to move the documents.

  • Diagnose Hardware Problems

To troubleshoot the hardware problems in your Windows 2000 Professional computer you need to do the following.

Open control panel > click Add/remove hardware > click next > click Add troubleshoot device.

  • Make a File and Folder Available Offline

Click My Computer or My Network Places and now click the shared file or folder that you want to make available offline.
On the file Menu click make available offline.

  • How to add a program in the Quick Launch Bar

To add a program in the quick launch bar, click the icon of the program that you want to add drag it to the quick launch portion of the taskbar.
The icon of the program will appear next to the other quick launch icons.

  • Speed Up the Boot Menu

Right Click my Computer and Choose Properties > Click Advance > Click Startup and recovery.
In the startup and recovery, you will see a list of the operating systems installed on your computer. Select the number of the seconds to wait before continuing to the default operating system.  Press Ok to close the dialog box.

  • Disable Recycle Bin

Right click on the “Recycle Bin” and click properties.
In the Properties select Global.
Check “Do not Move files to the Recycle bin”
Press Ok and close the dialog box.

  • Change Your Password

Press Control+Alt+Delete key and click Change password.

  • Test Your Printer

Click Start > Settings and Printer
When Printers Window appear, right click on the default printer name and choose properties.  In the printer’s properties tab select the general tab. Now click the test print page to test the quality of your printer.
