Introduction to Honey Pot
A honey pot is internet attached server that is specifically designed to luring in the potential hackers and the intruders in order to monitor their activities and observe how they break into a computer system. They are expressively setup to lure and attract the other people who want to attack the computer systems of the online people. They are setup for information gathering, prevention and detection system. They care generate the early warning about the coming attacks and threats.
They are easy to use, capture the required information and mainly used by the corporate companies to secure their networks from the online hackers and unauthorized users. Most honey pots are installed and configured inside the firewall programs so that they can be better controlled. For installing and setting up the honey pots the following actions are recommended.
- Install the operating system without patches.
- Make sure that there is not data on the server.
- Add the software that is designed to monitor the activities of the hackers and the invaders.
When a hacker attacks the system the administrator can monitor and trap it.
- The administrator can trap the hacker when he is trying to get the root access to the system.
- The administrator can see that what system’s vulnerabilities the hacker is attacking on. In this way, the administrator can know that where are the weaknesses in the system.
- By observing and monitoring the activities of the hackers the administrator can design the more secure and invulnerable system.
Honey pot acts as a surveillance and early warning tool. It is a computer or a network site that appears to be the isolated part of the network. It contains the information that is very valuable to the hackers and attackers. There are two major types of the honey pots i.e. low interaction honey pots and the high interaction honey pots. Honeyd is the low interaction honey pot and the honeynets are the high interaction honey pots. Honey pots help prevent the attacks in several ways.
