Introduction to RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it’s the most important component inside the computer. It is also known as main memory, internal memory and primary storage memory stick.  It’s a long, thin memory stick that resembles like a ruler. The contents of the RAM are volatile as opposed to the ROM.  It is the place where the operating system and the current running applications load.  It can also be found in the printers, mobile phones, digital cameras and other digital devices.

The contents of the RAM are being accessed by the computer’s processor through the data buses. It is much faster than the hard disk in its working. The data in it stays as long as the computer is running.  It is in the form of small chip and with the data capacity of 32Mb to 2Gb. Every computer requires a different amount of RAM to perform its operations.

The web servers, email servers, database servers and the file serves usually require the more RAM as compared to the workstation computer.  The more is the RAM in the computer the better will be performance. To get the optimized performance from your computer and to support the heavy applications you need to increase the amount of RAM.  The different memory modules range from the 256Mb to 4 GB.  The two common types of the RAM are DRAM and SRAM.
