Introduction to Modem

Modem is a computer hardware device that is used for the modulation and demodulation.  It provides the communication interface between two computers.  A modem can be connected to a computer internally and externally.  It modulates the digital signals to the analog signals so that they can travel on the telephony or cable lines and demodulates the analog signals into the digital signals for the computers.  There are different types of the modems such as Computer modem or fax modem, Cable modem and the ADSL modems.

Cable and ADSL modems are used to provide the high speed internet connectivity.  In the telecommunication networks and ISPs, the radio modems are used. There are different standardized methods protocols beings used that make the data to be transmitted.  Today, the original dials up modems have now become obsolete and they have been replaced by the high speed DSL and cable modems.

Computer’s Fax modems provide the speed up 56Kbps and the ADSL modems provide the speed that ranges from 128Kbps to 9Mbps. Modems provide the communications over the different networks such as GSM, GPRS and the PSTN.    Dial up connections provide relatively less speed as compared to the DSL and Cable internet.  DSL service providers provide the DSL modem, installation disk and the Ethernet cable.

After configuring your LAN card, you get connected with your computer at your DSL service provider.  Another type of modems is the optical modem that provides the data transmission over the fiber optic cables.
