Physical Memory
Computer memory refers to the RAM (Random Access Memory) that stores and recalls the data when needed. Every running application, software program and open documents inside the computer are temporarily stored in the memory. RAM comes in the form of chip and is capable of storing the data temporarily. RAM is available in the different capacities like that ranges from 32MB to 4GB. Normally there are 2 to 4 different RAM slots inside a computer.
Every RAM need to be compatible with the other hardware components inside the computer. If the RAM is not compatible then the system will generate noise and the error messages or the there should be no display at all. The data inside the RAM is accessed and processed by the central processing unit (CPU). RAM determines the size and the number of the programs at the same time. There are the following four types of the RAM.
- SRAM (Static Random Access Memory)
- DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory)
- DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM)
- Rambus DRAM (RDRAM)
- DIMMs vs RIMMs
RAM is consist of the integrated circuit that is made up of the millions capacitors and transistors. The capacitor is a like a bucket that stores the electrons. To store the 1 in the memory cell, the bucket is filled with the electrons and to store the 0 in the memory cell the bucket is emptied. RAM is directly or indirectly connected with the CPU via the RAM bus.
RAM bus consists of an address bus and data bus. The memory address of the data indicates the storage of the data. RAM is also known as the main memory, internal memory and the memory stick. Each motherboard supports the specific types of the RAM.
