    Floating Point Unit

Floating point is an important unit of the processor that is used to perform the mathematical functions and to make the floating point calculations. Floating Point is the representation of the real fractional numbers. Floating Point Unit is integrated into all types of current processors.  Typical functions of this unit are addition, multiplication, subtraction and calculations.  FLU’s operations are typically pipelined.  Today, many processors have more than one FPU.  A Floating Point Operation by the processor is carried out by the following three methods.

  • A floating point unit emulator (a floating-point library)
  • Integrated FPU
  • Add-on FPU

The examples of the Floating point numbers includes the following.

  • 3.0
  • -111.5
  • ½
  • 3E-5

FPU are also known as the math co-processors and the numeric co-processors.  Today, some of the common web based applications like Shockwave require that the computer has the FPU.  If the computer is old and it does not have the FPU then a program can FPU emulator can be downloaded and used.

Some of the FPU can perform the more advanced functions like exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometry. FPU has become the necessity in the modern computations.  The calculations and mathematical operations with the floating numbers require a great deal of the computing power and high speed processor.  The floating point’s calculations and procedures are based on the IEEE 754 standard.
